AREA & ACTIVITIES
Matatiele form part of a farming community, is a trading post for part of Lesotho and a town with a rich history. It falls in the area called East Griqualand, that was also known as “No man’s land”. The R56 through Matatiele offers an alternative, more scenic route, from Pietermaritzburg and KZN Midlands to the Cape. There are also 3 border post through which you can gain access to Lesotho.
The border posts to Lesotho are: Quacha’s Nek (35km, but about 1 hour’s drive), Ongeluksnek (65km, strictly 4x4, no border post on Lesotho’s side) and Ramatseliso (45km and the highest border post in South Africa).
Matatiele area provides numerous opportunities for family or solo activities.
Activities in the area:
Some routes are strictly 4x4. Please enquire about dirt road conditions before attempting to travel it.
Exploring the area and Lesotho on motor bikes has become a very popular activity in the area. Matatiele has hosted an extreme motor bike event in 2014 and national and/regional motor bike events in the past.
The Matatiele Mountain Lake, 8km from De Berg Guesthouse, is well stocked with rainbow and brown trout. Please ask us about a permit / day pass.
Our area is ideal mountain bike terrain. The Matatiele R56 section form part of the "Freedom Challenge route".
Some species to look out for is: Rudd’s Lark, Banded Martin, Cape Long Claw, Eastern Long billed Lark, Gras veld Pippit, Amur Valcon, Cranes, Swallows, Ground Hornbill, etc.

Matatiele is approximately 1500m above sea level, and is surrounded by mountains and hills making it an ideal training area for various sports.
Beautiful sunsets, flowers, grass, landscapes.
Post degree students often visit Matatiele to do research on the rock formations, rare insects, the plant live etc.

Flowers and Grasses:
During the spring early summer Matatiele mountain lake reserve boast with an abundant grass and flower "life".
Just go for a relaxed hike in the Matatiele Mountain Lake reserve or book a guided hike at Mehloding hiking trail.
